Teaching Students How to Leverage AI in Assignments

I recently had the privilege of participating in the Online Learning Consortium (OLC) conference in Washington, D.C., a gathering predominantly attended by higher education professionals. What struck me was that the struggle to adapt to the growing influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education is not limited to K-12 settings; it's a sentiment echoed at the collegiate level as well. Opinions were diverse; some advocated for an outright ban on AI in academic settings, while others were keen to understand how to manage AI in their courses effectively.

The one thing that was clear is that educators, irrespective of the grades they teach, are yearning for more tangible ways to navigate this complex yet promising landscape.

By now, I’m hoping most educators see they are navigating an era of unprecedented technological growth, where Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer the subject of science fiction but an everyday reality. In this environment, the role of educators is more vital than ever. Preparing students for a future interwoven with AI not only enhances their academic journey but also equips them with skills that are crucial for tomorrow’s workforce. While the integration of AI in the educational setting presents its challenges, the rewards are significant. This post aims to encourage K-12 and higher education instructors to harness the power of AI in the classroom and equip students with the skills to utilize AI in their assignments.

The Significance of AI in Education

By teaching students how to integrate AI into their learning, educators at all levels can enhance cognitive skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity. Students can also gain an early grasp of the ethics and responsibilities that come with using AI, making them not just informed users but responsible citizens and users of AI. For educators who are new to AI, the notion of incorporating it into the classroom might seem daunting. And that’s okay; every significant educational movement starts with a single step. Begin by using simple AI-driven tools like automated formative feedback or predictive text features to familiarize yourself and your students with AI functionalities. There’s a myriad of edtech platforms such as Magicschool.ai, Diffit, Perplexity, (and more) offering easy-to-use AI features designed to make the transition smooth for both instructors and students.

Fostering a Positive AI Culture

Incorporating AI into assignments doesn’t have to be complicated. Start with straightforward tasks such as using AI tools to analyze texts, summarize articles, or even create basic data models. It’s essential to cultivate a classroom atmosphere where both educators and students can experiment, make mistakes, and learn from them together. By encouraging a positive, experimental AI culture, educators empower students to be proactive, curious, and engaged learners.

Teaching AI to students is a journey, one that educators themselves might have to undertake first. Luckily, numerous resources exist to help guide you along the way, from online courses designed to provide foundational knowledge in AI to communities of educators sharing best practices. The key is continuous professional development and a willingness to adapt.

As with any technological advancement, AI brings its ethical considerations to the table. Therefore, part of teaching students how to use AI in their assignments involves making them aware of the ethical implications, such as data privacy, biases, and the responsible use of technology. An ethics discussion is not just an addendum but an integral part of the AI education process.

As we venture deeper into the 21st century, AI will continue to influence various sectors, including education. For instructors in K-12 and higher education, this presents an exciting opportunity to be pioneers in an ever-evolving landscape. By embracing AI and integrating it thoughtfully into the curriculum, we not only elevate the learning experience but also prepare students for the world that awaits them.

Let’s move away from apprehension and embrace this new frontier, armed with the right tools and mindset. After all, the goal of education is to prepare student for their future – a future that is increasingly shaped by Artificial Intelligence.
